Asphalt paving is the default for most driveways, and for good reason. But concrete is a close match for asphalt. Which is best for your home or business? We at East Tex Paving offer a variety of […]
What Exactly IS Sealcoating?
Sealcoating is a process in which a substance, usually oil-, asphalt-, or acrylic-based, is coated on top of an asphalt road to protect it from motor oil, water, and UV rays. Are you renovating your home with a concrete driveway? Even though concrete doesn't need to be sealed it will help lock in the color!
Your asphalt needs to be resealed, at best, every few years and, at worst, every season.
The Five Types of Sealcoating
There are five types of asphalt sealcoating:
- Coal Tar Emulsion
Coal tar emulsion is the cheapest and most durable sealcoating typically available. However, because coal tar is dangerous to public health and the environment, it is banned in certain areas.
- Asphalt Emulsion
Asphalt emulsion is nearly as cheap as coal tar emulsion, but doesn't protect against UV radiation and needs to be reapplied seasonally.
- Acrylic Sealcoating
Acrylic sealants can come in colors other than gray and black. They protect against UV rays, water, and oils, last for years, and are nearly double the price of coal tar and asphalt emulsion.
- Fast Dry Sealcoating
Fast dry sealants are difficult to find in large quantities and tend to be more expensive than acrylic, asphalt, and coal tar sealants of the same quantity.
- Oil-based Sealcoating
Oil-based seals are a foul-smelling mixture that takes nearly an entire week to cure. It only protects against water, not motor oil or UV radiation.
